WORLD PADDLE ASSOCIATION CERTIFICATION TRAINING 2023
Welcome to Stand Up Paddleboarding with Melody Benton of Cypress Roots SUP School.
Melody is certified as a level 2 World Paddle Association Paddleboarding Instructor with over 20 years experience in the fitness and physical rehabilitation industry. This certification training is a combination of the WPA level 1 curriculum + updated SUP & surf culture knowledge and advanced paddling skills, like intro to SUP Surfing and white water SUP. Melody’s extensive experience on all water ways, with her ongoing studies and training of natural movement enriches this course giving participants the highest quality of education and training available producing highly trained and skilled paddleboarding coaches.
Certification is awarded upon completing the course. This includes passing written and physical test and achieving a satisfactory evaluation of your coaching abilities and attention to safety. You will receive a Cypress Roots SUP Instructor manual for referencing.
Pre-Requisites
Have current either First Aid/CPR certification, Lifeguard Training certification or an equivalent.
Be in good overall physical shape, be able to swim 200 yards and be able to lift and carry all equipment.
Be able to launch and land a board safely, as well as safely fall from and remount a board.
Be comfortable walking on a SUP board and comfortable balancing in various water conditions.
Know basic SUP paddling techniques and be able to maintain directional control of a board, including various strokes for turning and paddling straight.
Be able to paddle a minimum of 3-5 miles in varied conditions – for example, flat water and choppy.
Have at least basic knowledge of paddling equipment, SUP terms and history of the sport.
Have positive interpersonal skills and show others a FUN time!
Note: Your instructor has the right not to pass students who do not adequately demonstrate the skills and have low overall evaluation. A student who does not pass may continue to work toward certification by practicing own your own and taking SUP classes from other certified instructors.
Curriculum
Water safety - emergency preparedness, rescue techniques, boating laws, etc
Interpretation of weather and water conditions
On-water group management and communication
Learn a one hour class sequence from set up & launching to board return and packing up
Modifications and variations to meet your students needs with safety
How to teach the basic elements of stand up paddling to beginners
Approaches to teaching students of varying ages, abilities, skill levels, and limitations
Lesson formats and preparation
Methods of structuring the flow of a class
SUP mobility warm ups and cool downs important for the success of the student, injury prevention & integrity of the sport
SUP board anatomy of all current types of SUP boards on the market, fin education, proper gear for different SUP sports
Requirements for Course Completion and Certification
Tests are Pass/Fail with Passing grade at 80% or better.
Pass on-water skills test
Pass written test
Demonstrate ability to teach land-based and on-water scenarios
Approved overall student evaluation, which includes accessing leadership, teaching skills, and attention to safety
